What ATF proposed
The proposal would distinguish an existing statutory exemption from the Director’s separate authority to grant relief from certain NFA requirements. It would also expressly address manufacturer registration relief for firearms produced for the U.S. Government and provide a process to register qualifying firearms after the normal registration window if they later fall out of government contract.
Current status
The comment period ended September 4, 2026. A proposal does not itself authorize a manufacturer to use the contemplated late-registration procedure. Continue following current registration requirements and any existing written relief applicable to your facts while monitoring for final action.
