What ATF proposed
ATF proposed amending its NFA regulations so spouses could submit a joint application to make, transfer or receive, and register an NFA firearm. If approved, the proposal would give both registered spouses a joint right to possess the firearm and would address transfers between them.
Current status
ATF identifies this as a notice of proposed rulemaking released May 8, 2026. The comment period ended July 7, 2026. It should be tracked as a possible future workflow, not treated as a current registration option until a final action takes effect.
