Proposal summary
ATF proposed clarifying that activities reasonably necessary to interstate transportation—such as temporary lodging, food or fuel stops, vehicle maintenance, emergencies, medical treatment, and transfers between modes of transportation—can fall within the federal transportation provision described in the notice. The proposal also addresses ammunition, accessories, and firearm security during transit.
Current status
ATF identifies this as a notice of proposed rulemaking released May 6, 2026, with comments closing August 4, 2026. It does not itself change the rules governing a particular trip.
