ATF proposed substantial changes to Form 4473 earlier in 2026, which created understandable uncertainty about whether dealers should prepare to switch forms immediately. The July 29 interim notice is an important checkpoint: ATF said it would seek extension of the existing information collection without change while it considers comments on the proposed revisions.
Dealer takeaway
A proposed or draft 4473 is not a substitute for the current approved form. Continue using the form ATF currently identifies for transactions until ATF actually publishes and implements a replacement.
